Building deck stairs looks complicated but it can be done on your own too. One must know what are stringers, treads, and risers that are used in deck stairs and should be well-versed with operating the wood cutting tools to do this task on their own.
Follow the below steps to do it.
Step 1: The first step is to measure the height from the land to the top of the deck. That is the height from which your first step till your last step will lay. Before that, you have to make sure the ground is leveled and you are measuring the correct height. For that you can use staircase calculator.
Step 2: Now, you have to select whether you want an inside or outside stringer.
Step 3: Now, you have to think about the height of the risers. Risers are the vertical wooden strips that you will put to build the stairs, they will be a part of the stringers only.
The height of a riser shouldn’t be too little and too much. Thinking about the approximate height of a riser will give you an idea about how many total stairs you will have.
For calculating the total number of stairs, use the below formula.
Total number of stairs= Total height/height of one riser
If you have a total height of 100 inches and you are keeping the height of one riser of 10 inches then there will be a total of 10 stairs. (100/10).
Accordingly, you can manage the height of the riser and the total number of stairs.
Step 4: Now, you have to lay the concrete footer.
For this, you have to excavate the land, remove the grass and debris, and level the land. Add pea gravel to it and level it. Now, add cement and then add pea gravel again until the hole gets filled. Level it properly and let it get dried for 48 hrs.
Step 5:
Now, you have to cut the stringers from the wooden board. Stringers are the sides of your steps.
Layout the measurements on the board and cut it with a circular saw. As per the height of the riser and the width of the tread, you have to set the measurements and cut it. There will be two stringers so after cutting one, you can put it on the other wooden board and cut along its measurements as it will be the same.
Step 6:
Now, you have to attach the stringers to the deck and the footer. The bottom part of the stringer will lay on the concrete pad and the upper part will lay on the top of the deck. You have to attach the stringers to the deck using angle brackets and 3” galvanized deck screws.
You have to connect a board between the two stringers at the base. This will lay good support.
Step 7: Lay the treads
Treads are the horizontal part of the stairs on which you lay your leg while stepping up.
Step 8:
Staircase building is done. Now, you can lay the railings and start using it.
